Cannabis THC promotes functional remyelination in mouse brain shows cannabis can cure multiple sclerosis

Scientists from Complutense University of Madrid in Spain, which have a motto of “Libertas Perfundet Omnia Luce”, “Freedom will flood all things with light”, published a paper “Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Promotes Functional Remyelination in the Mouse Brain”.

Myelin, and multiple sclerosis

Myelin is an insulating material. Nerves send and receive messages from every part of your body and process them in your brain, and it is coated in myelin. Myelin is made of membrane layers that cover an axon. This is similar to the idea of an electrical wire with coating to protect the metal underneath.

Damage to myelin around nerves is called demyelination. The damage could be occured by either external damage and natural aging.

Cause of multiple sclerosis: Demyelination

Certain viral infections, metabolic problems, loss of oxygen, physical compression can damage myelin and cause demyelination. Inflammation is the most common cause of myelin damage. And multiple sclerosis is the most common disease caused by demyelination disorder.

Demyelination slows down messages sent along axons and causes the axon to deteriorate. When it’s worn away or damaged, nerves can deteriorate, causing problems in the brain and throughout the body.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. In this disorder, your immune system attacks the myelin sheath or the cells that produce and maintain it. This causes inflammation and injury to the sheath and ultimately to the nerve fibers that it surrounds.

  • Optic neuritis — inflammation of the optic nerve in one or both eyes
  • Neuromyelitis optica (Devic’s disease) — inflammation and demyelination of the central nervous system, especially of the optic nerve and spinal cord
  • Transverse myelitis — inflammation of the spinal cord
  • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis — inflammation of the brain and spinal cord
  • Adrenoleukodystrophy and adrenomyeloneuropathy — rare, inherited metabolic disorders

Solution for multiple sclerosis: Remyelination

Scientists from Spain found Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid of cannabis, promotes functional remyelination, which regenerating the demyelinated axons in mouse model. This means THC can help people who are suffering with multiple sclerosis, or any who are suffering with demyelinating disease.

THC administration enhanced oligodendrocyte regeneration, white matter remyelination, and motor function recovery. THC also promoted axonal remyelination in organotypic cerebellar cultures.

Scientists noted the THC remyelinating action relied on the induction of oligodendrocyte precursor differentiation upon cell cycle exit and via CB1 cannabinoid receptor activation.

Another proof of medicinal cannabis

This study from Spain gives hope to the people who are suffering from multiple sclerosis to cure it, as THC could remyelinate the damaged myelin. Furthermore, this study empowers the thesis that cannabis is the best anti-aging solution and could even reverse aging brain.

Cannabis, marijuana, weed, whatever you name it, it is not an evil drug, but an essential nutrition for all living being!
